Dog suddenly scared, hiding, whining, and sad. Is it anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 2 months old | 20 lbs

My dog recently started acting scared at random times, he will run from me and hide under the bed. He also will whine randomly and is scared to jump off the bed and whines once he jumps. I've tried to find any sore spots on him but he doesn't whine when I touch anywhere specific. He also seems super sad lately and I can't figure out why. He's eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally.

It's hard to know if Gunner is having emotional issues or is experiencing a medical problem. I recommend a complete examination and some basic diagnostics like blood work and radiographs. If all these things are normal, you may want to investigate anti-anxiety medication like Lorazepam. And check out this great behavior website: dogstardaily.com for help with anxiety. Good luck!
