Why can't my dog walk? Sudden hind leg weakness after injury.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 30 lbs

My dog bit the tip of his tail a month ago, leaving a tiny bit of bone protruding out.this led to weakening of the hind legs, loss of appetite, and high fever. We took him to the vet and he gave some medications for Neuro arthritis.the dog was fine for a week but since today morning he is not able to walk.he's just hobbling around on his front legs, the rear ones seem not to function, and are not at all responsive.Could this be degenerative myelopathy or rheumotoid arthritis? Should X-ray be done?

IT is definitely time for further investigations - a CSF tap of the fluid around his spine as well as x-rays or MRI may be recommended in order to identify any infection, inflammation and spinal disk issues which are contributing to his symptoms. If there is no movement or response to deep pain in the limbs this is a very serious situation and may not be reversible - I recommend referral to a neurologist in order to assess all possible treatment options and likely outcomes.
