My dog's snout has black scabs & red skin. Why isn't it healing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 75 lbs

My dog has these black crusty scab like things on her snout. They come off easily but seems to leave the skin underneath red. It doesn't seem to be healing, is it something serious ? I thought maybe one of our cats scratch her or something but it seems to not be getting any better

Hi! That doesn't sound too serious to me. It's possible that the area is itchy and she is scratching at it, causing the scabbing. She may be getting insect bites in this area. Keep an eye on her skin, and if this continues, you could always have Zoey checked out by her vet, to be sure there are no skin parasites, or anything else to worry about.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to ringworm. This could also be just a focal skin bacterial infection due to allergies, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Minnie evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Ringworm can be transmitted to humans so just in case this is what is going with Minnie, wear gloves when handling this lesion. Good luck and best wishes!
