Why does my cat poop outside litter box when bullied by others?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 11 lbs

Sedona will poop outside her litter box. We also lost a rug because she had pooped and peed on it so many times. We have 2 more cats, male and female, who will pick on her and sometimes corners her. Why is she doing this?? We don't have any stray cats who roam the neighborhood.

Poor Sedona! She may be refusing to use the litter box because she is being bulled by the other cats. That will stress her out, and they may be chasing her away from the litter box. It's recommended that there should be one more litter box than the number of cats you have, so you should have four litter boxes for your cats. I would set at least two in separate places in the home so she has a safe place to go to the bathroom. I would also not allow the other two cats to bully her. Separate them immediately when you see them picking on her or cornering her. I would also get Feliway, which is a pheromone diffuser that helps cats with anxiety. You may also want to speak to your vet about anti-anxiety medication for Sedona.
