How to handle aggression between my older pitbull and younger puppy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | | 55 lbs

We have two pitbulls, one is 10 years he is very gentle , never bites or shows aggression ,but is in heat alot and tries to overpower the puppy. Enzo is 9 months and he gets aggressive when the older one comes after him. He snarls first, then will try to bite him, causing the older one to bite back. I dont know how to handle this , thanks!

This behavior is likely so-called dominance behavior. You will need to find out who is the boss and the dominant dog (boss) should always get fed first, be petted first and addressed first. If you start preferring the Number 2 dog over the dominant dog, then the dominant dog will try to punish the Number 2 dog. You need to let the two dogs work it out themselves, and not feel sorry for the underdog. Once the ranking is clear the biting and aggression should stop.
