My dog has flaky, itchy ears. What gentle treatment can I use?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 3 years and 8 months old | 17 lbs

He seems to have dandruff only on his ears, and no where else on his body. Is there anything I could use that is gentle and tear free to help with the dandruff and itchiness?

You could try using a gentle oatmeal shampoo for pets, but if this does not improve Bentley's flaky skin, he may need to visit his vet. Several conditions, such as fungal infections or vasculitis, among others, can cause flaky skin on the ear alone.

Flaky skin is typically associated with inflammation. Given the location it is possible that Ollie has an infection in his ear or has generalized inflammation secondary to allergies. An antihistamine may be helpful if allergies are to blame but I would recommend that you have Ollie examined by your veterinarian before starting any medications. They will be able to determine what the underlying cause is and how best to treat it
