Why did my dog's paw bleed near the dew claw with no visible cut?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 16 days old | 9 lbs

On our walk I caught him sniffing something and pulled him away from it, he hunkered down to continue sniffing but yelped suddenly. I picked him up and saw that the inside of his front right paw was bleeding, right above the dew claw. I washed off the blood but didn't see any noticeable cut/abrasion, just a small bit of redness where the bleeding was. He's not favoring the leg or licking at it, basically seems to have forgotten about it. No blood after the first few secs it happened.

It is possible he may have caught the dew claw and injured it or he may have been stung/bitten by an insect etc. Continue to monitor for any increased pain or discomfort and keep the area bathed with salted water to prevent infection
