Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 16 days old | 25 lbs
After giving my dog dewormer medication he will not eat but does keep water down. He hasn't eaten on 2 days and is starting to lose weight. What can I do? I have tried bland diets, changing his food bowl, and even tried to give him treats. He is 5 1/2 months old and I am very worried about him

Some dewormers may cause some gastrointestinal upset. It is good that Frankie will drink water and keep it down. Consider mixing in some unflavored PediaLyte. Try a bland diet again but warm it slightly or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate his appetite. Once he is eating regularly, transition slowly to the regular diet. If he still refuses to eat in the next 24 hours, have him examined by your veterinarian

If he hasn't eaten for 2 days, it's highly abnormal, you need to take him to the vet as he might be suffering from a gastrointestinal infection and will need to be treated with medications in order to get better.

I would take Frankie into a vet immediately. It's not a normal reaction for a dog to stop eating for two days after being dewormed and if he's losing weight, he needs veterinary attention now. Please take him into a vet right away.

Bruno may be a bit nauseous after deworming, which would be normal. Offer him small amounts of food. He should eat normally again in a day or two. He may also get a bit of diarrhea, as the dying worms tend to release toxins which the body wants to get rid off as quickly as possible. Should he not start to eat normally in two days or get diarrhea for more than two days, you should put him on a bland diet, ie boiled white rice with white boiled boneless chicken for two days, then reintroduce his regular food slowly. If he appears lethargic and ill, he needs to be seen by a veterinarian.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Losing weight despite a good appetite and no vomiting or diarrhea is likely due to underlying intestinal disease. I would still highly recommend submitting a stool sample to your Vet. And even if it is negative deworm her again with a broad spectrum dewormer if it has been longer than 6 months. Then I would increase the amount to food fed to her, if she will eat it. If that doesn't do the trick I would put her on a higher fat content diet. So change brands. It might be worth taking her to the Vet and putting her on their scale to confirm that she is losing weight. If the above doesn't work then a vet exam is needed. I hope this helps and I wish Rosie the best!
