My cat has HCM. Should I take him to the vet for breathing changes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 years and 8 months old

Hi Toki has hcm, he has been acting a bit off colour and has been very fussy when taking his medicine but what is worrying is that his resting breathing rate per minute is going from 44 bpm to 20 bpm about 10 minutes later. I am not sure what to do if I should take him to his vet, he is having his 3 monthly check in about two weeks time. Thanks for your help in advance.

Since Toki has been a bit off, I think it would be better to have him checked out sooner rather than later. Changes in his respiratory rate could indicate fluid accumulation in his lungs as a result of HCM. That said, the respiratory rates that you are describing are relatively normal. Better safe than sorry!
