My dog has an itchy, red, smelly rash under his body. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13 years and 3 months old | 28 lbs

Our poor little Jack Russell who is usually such a happy little personality is very miserable with an awful rash under his body, particularly under the front legs, even under where his collar goes. He does not appear to have fleas (we use Revolution flea treatment) and he smells a little when he does not usually have much of an odour. He is very itchy and the rash is awfully pink/red. I've been putting pawpaw ointment on the itch.

Poor Mojo! This sounds quite uncomfortable! Due to red, itchy, and smelly skin, it is possible that Mojo has developed a fungal and/or bacterial skin infection. Skin infections most commonly occur with underlying allergies to fleas, food or the environment. New allergies can develop at any age. At this point, Mojo should see his vet for an exam so that his skin can be evaluated. He may need antibiotics, antifungals, and anti-itch medications to allow this issue to resolve. I hope he feels better soon!
