Is it true a low protein diet is best for my healthy 9-year-old dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Female | spayed | 9 years and 3 months old | 60 lbs

Is it true that a 9 year old dog in good health should be put on a low protein diet? I have done a lot of research and have not found any truth to that accept it is an old mentality and can result in more harm than good. Thank you

You are correct that a senior dog doesn't need to put onto a low protein diet and it can cause more harm than good. Senior dogs need lower calories to prevent obesity because they have a slower metabolic rate.
