What large dog breeds thrive in apartments with busy schedules?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, I love dogs and I was waiting until I get a bigger place to get one, but I don’t know when will that be, so I would like to know (from an expert) what breed of dog will be somewhat comfortable in an apartment. I like big dogs. I have access to a yard but not directly from my apartment. I also have a big terrace for him to lay outside, but for running. The dog will be alone 6-7 hours a day from Monday to Thursday and I am very active on the weekends. Pure or mixed breed is good. Thanks!

More important than breed is the personality of the dog. Since you're gone during he day so much a puppy is not a good choice. I'd go with a shelter dog who is an adult already and seems to have a very calm personality type. Stay away from border collies, dalmations, many retrievers, and other innately-hyper working breeds as they require alot of attention and activity.

Hi there! If you're looking for a large-breed dog that would do well in an apartment, I would consider a greyhound. They usually make lovely, calm apartment dogs who like to snooze most of the day, as long as they get a chance to get out and run once or twice a week. A giant breed dog like a Newfoundland or Great Dane would also be an option - even though they are large, they aren't very high energy so can do well as apartment dogs in many cases :)
