My 10-month-old cat has flank pain & is acting clingy. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 lbs

My 10 month old cat is showing signs of pain in her lower back? I'm not sure if I would describe it as her back or not, though it's the soft and tender parts of her flank, right below or near her hip bones. She has been perfectly fine until lately and has been acting much more clingy than usual, though she's still eating the same and using the litter box the same. I know that sudden clinginess and change of behavior (from noisy to quiet) can mean that something is wrong, so this frightens me.

Hi! It sounds as if Alice has been injured in this area. Is it possible that another cat may have bit her? If so, she could have an abscess (infection under the skin) brewing. Or, she might have landed wrong in a jump, and strained the muscles. Keep an eye on her tonight, and if this is still an issue in the morning, it is probably best that she is checked out by her vet. They might be able to figure out what is causing the tenderness, and prescribe some medication. Best of luck!
