Why does my dog cry after bath when I clean his private area?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 1 month old | 23 lbs

Earlier today I went and walked my dog and he jumped in a near by neighborhood pond and I had to get him out and we walked back home, when we got home I washed him and I cleaned his paws and ears and any openings on him to make sure nothing was in there and I also cleaned around his penis area (got the dirt off that was stuck) but now ever since the bath he's cries every time I pic him up or when he barks or when he closes his legs, I think I may have rubbed to hard around there.. Please Help.

Oops! It sounds like Gus is either painful or fearful of your attentions to his groin area. There isn't much you're going to be able to do about this at home. I doubt you rubbed vigorously enough to do any real damage, but likely he is sensitized to having his penis handled right now. I would leave him alone, make sure he is eating and drinking ok and able to urinate, and if he seems like this area is still painful tomorrow schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to examine the area and potentially start pain medication.
