My puppy skips breakfast but eats dinner. Is she getting enough calories?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, this is our first week home with Roxy. She is doing well but I am finding that she really doesn't want to eat breakfast. I'm ending up taking it away after 10/15 minutes, she only eat 1/4 of it. I leave out 1/4 cup puppy biscuits throughout the day but only a few eaten. At night to get her into the routine of 6pm dinner after work, I give her dinner then, she eats all it. Then around 9pm she wants more food, so I give her another dinner. She seems happy but is she getting enough calories?

Great questions! Take a look at the bag of food that you are giving Roxy and determine how much she should be eating given her age and current body weight. Using that volume, divide it into 2 meals for the morning and 6pm "first dinner". Save whatever she doesn't finish in the morning and offer it at her 9pm "second dinner". Try not to leave out too many biscuits during the day, even if she isn't eating them currently. As she gets older, biscuit and table scrap ingestion can be some of the leading causes of obesity. Some dogs prefer not eating much in the morning - this is still normal. :-)
