Dog eye surgery: Is mucus normal? Can my other dog be around?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shar Pei | Female | spayed | 9 months and 18 days old | 40 lbs

She had surgery yesterday on her right eye to fix her entropion eyelids. Her eyes looks kinda mucusy. Is that normal? I've been putting ophthalmic ointment every 3 hours and giving her cephalexin orally. She hasn't been wanting to drink water. She did eat. can I let my other dog around her?

Some discharge is going to be normal because the surgery is associated with alot of swelling of the eyelids, and swelling can cause the eyes to produce more tears. Tears mixed with the ointment is going to look a little mucous-like. If the other dog is not going to lick her eyes or try to get her to play wildly, then yes it can be around her. If she is really squinting badly tomorrow, or if you see the corneas starting to look blue or cloudy, you need to take her in for a recheck right away. If sh'es eating fine, don't worry about the water--she will drink when she's thirsty.
