My dog fell and seems okay. Should I still take him to the vet?

My 30lb dog fell 3.5 ft two hours ago and is not limping, whining or acting weird at all. He is not running a fever and nothing is bruised, swollen or bleeding. He was freaked out at first, but after a 30 minute nap is acting lile nothing happned. Does he still need to go to the vet?

In my experience, injuries like this often take a bit of time to manifest. Usually there is at least some soreness involved, and even though it doesn't sound like anything is broken, I would recommend a vet visit to be sure. It's kind of like straining something at the gym - you often don't feel the pain for several hours, and you vet can give him a bit of an anti-inflammatory pain medication to help him be more comfortable.

Oh no, poor Memo. He could have been quite injured by this fall. If you see limping, he is lethargic and refuses to move much, has a loss of appetite, there is blood coming from his nose or mouth, he appears confused or disorientated, or he has seizures, you need to take him into a vet immediately.

Yes, still take him to the vet. They will likely want to take an X-ray in addition to the exam to rule out any tears, sprains, or breaks that may need treatment. Until you can get to your vet, continuing the strict kennel-rest can help reduce any further injury.

I would give it a couple of hours if you are not seeing any swelling or obvious disfigurement. He may have just sprained, or strained something. You can ice the affected area for 15 minutes while you let him rest for the next two hours. If he is not using the leg at all after the two hours and/or it starts to swell, then I would be concerned about a fracture and recommend you take him to the vet within the next 24 hours. If he is limping the next day, then it would be worth scheduling a non-emergency vet appointment to get it checked and at-least get some pain medication prescribed. Minor injuries are often painful at first, but quickly get better in the next day or two. For now, you can continue the icing for 15 minutes 3-4 times a day until he gets better. Do not allow him to run or jump until he is back to normal, or advised by a veterinarian. I hope that helps and Tyson gets better soon.

This definitely indicates a painful injury, but I would have to examine her in order to know the severity of it. Generally, the less weight they put on the leg, the more severe the injury. However, dogs often have an exaggerated response to their injury right after it happens. I recommend taking Elisha to a vet right away if you notice swelling, or an obvious deformity in the leg. Compare the affected leg with the normal one. If you are not seeing any obvious difference in the leg, then you are safe to wait an hour or so and see if she improves. If she does not improve after two hours, then it's best to take her to the vet, so this can be accurately diagnosed and treated. If you can have him examined by your veterinarian now, that would be optimal. Your veterinarian may recommend x-rays after a physical exam to rule out any fractures. Monitor for lethargy, difficulty breathing, bleeding from the nose, mouth or ears, bruising or swelling.

I would watch Rukis for 24 hours. If you notice any swelling or if he is still limping tomorrow, it is a good idea to get him seen by the vet. I have seen dogs not act painful with broken legs. It could also be muscle sprain or a torn ligament causing him to limp. Try to keep him confined for at least 24 hours so that he can rest whatever it is that is causing the limp. If you find a sore spot, you can use an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 15 minutes at a time, and use gently massage on the area as he will allow. Unfortunately no human OTC medications are safe for use in dogs.

My dog fell from a height and is now limping. She doesn't like her front legs moved but is not wimpering and doesn't appear to be in pain when pressing on any part.
Poor Lily! There are many different possibilities in this case. It may be that she has simply bruised herself or damaged a muscle or ligament. However she may have a more serious injury such as a fracture or ligament rupture. If she seems to be comfortable and nothing looks out of place you could let her rest 24 hours then if she is no better or getting worse head to the vet.

It would be a good idea to have your vet do an exam to determine the cause of his pain and if treatment is needed. He may just have a soft tissue injury and your vet could prescribe and anti-inflammatory to help alleviate his pain.

If it just started you can let Tipu rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take him to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, he might need pain killers for a few days. if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well.
