My 11-year-old cat has terminal liver cancer. What's his prognosis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 years and 5 months old | 16 lbs

my cat has recently been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. He is doing well right now and we have him on pain meds. He is 11 years old and he has a large tumor in his abdomen about the size of a fist. I would say it had been growing there for about 6 months now. He can walk around with ease and he is eating and drinking well. He has had respiratory problems in the past so he tends to stick his tounge out. He is a fairly large cat as well weighing about 15-16 pounds. how much time does he hav

I am so sorry that your cat has terminal liver cancer. The amount of time that he has it difficult to predict without knowing the exact type of tumor, if it is affecting his liver function or any other organs in his body, and if it has spread any place else. Your vet could recheck blood work and/or x-rays to see how the tumor has progressed and they give you more information about the prognosis. Typically, the life expectancy for cats with liver cancer is a few months to a year. Once again, so sorry that Dasher has liver cancer.
