Kitten uses litter box all day but pees on sofa at night. Why?

Congrats on your new kitten Star! I hate to hear that she is having this issue. First you want to make sure that you are making the litter box and the area around the box as appealing as possible. You should consider adding a second litter box make sure to clean them daily. Studies have shown that cats prefer large, uncovered litter boxes with a clumping clay based litter. They want to box to be in a private area where they cannot be trapped by other pets. Certainly make sure you are sticking to the guidelines. Some cats who urinate outside the litter box can actually have pain when they urinate and this could contribute to the behavior. Since they can't talk, I recommend to have her urine checked for any signs of infection or other abnormalities. make an appointment with her veterinarian. I had this exact same thing happen to me when my kitten was young. He would get so busy playing that he would "forget" to pee and when he finally couldn't hold it anymore, he would have to run to the litterbox. I found that I would have to take my kitten to the litter box every couple of hours just to "remind" him to use it for a few weeks until he got older. I suspect it is just immaturity, but certainly if it continues to happen as he gets older, have your vet evalate a urine sample to make sure there isn't something medical going on. I would bring her into your vet for a urinalysis. Certainly there are behavioral causes for inappropriate urination, but it is important to rule out medical causes. I would also increase the number of litter boxes in your home and try some Feliway pheromone therapy to reduce stress. First and foremost, however, I would rule out a urinary tract infection or crystalluria.

A lot of times, I recommend that the cat is seen by his veterinarian to ensure he does not have a medical problem. However, at his age, a urinary tract infection or inflammation is less likely. My guess is that he is very young and is having accidents. You can add another litter box to your bedroom or place him in a small room with a litter box over night. Be sure to provide water. Give her time , make sure she knows where the litter box is, preferably confine her to a room so she does not have to run far when the urge hits. She will probably do her business when it is quiet in the house and she feels safe. The new home is scary at this time as there are new people, new smells, a new place.and she misses the security of being with her mommy and siblings.

There can be a couple of reasons why Keuchel will not use the litter box. Cats like a very clean box, and the litter should be scooped every day with the litter itself being changed once a week. If the box isn't clean enough for him, he won't use it. Cats can also be very picky about the type of litter used. If you changed litter recently, he may not like it and won't want to use it. Don't use scented litters, cats typically don't like the scent and will not use the box if it smells funny to them. I would use an unscented litter only. The litter box itself may be a problem. It could be too small for him to turn around in, or if it has a cover, he may not like using the box under a cover. Conversely, if it doesn't have a cover, he may not like going to the bathroom in the open. Cats also won't use a litter box that is too close to their food and water sources, so if the litter box is close to those, he won't use it. Use a litter box attractant. You can purchase one from most pet stores. If she defecates under the bed, remove the stool and place it on the litterbox. Block her access to the bed. Use tin foil or a carpet runner flipped upside down (pokey side up) to keep her off the bed.

This sounds behavioral to me based on your description. I typically recommend having multiple litter boxes around and wherever she is urinating, place a litter box right there and see if that helps. Hi, a kitten this young may have problems using the litterbox. Use a softer litter and a low box that will attract him to use it. Also, confining him to a large cage where he has a bed and a litter pan will help train him to use the litter. At 22 days old he may need help being stimulated, which means rubbing him with a warm wet cloth a few times a day until he is old enough to go on his own. You can also use paper towels to soak up the urine. He should have this done about every 5 hours or so. When he is old enough, he will likely seek out the litter box. Good luck, I hope this helps!
