Is high protein dog food better? Deboned meat vs. meat meal explained.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 45 lbs

I've been feeding my 15 month old husky/lab mix a grain free diet that is 26% protein. I have recently discovered the same manufacturer makes a food that is 38% protein. Both foods are made by Merrick, one has deboned meat, while the other is a meat meal. Is there an advantage to feeding the higher protein?

Higher protein is much better for highly athletic dogs. If your dog is more of a couch potato I would not recommend it. I DO, however, always prefer deboned meat to "meal". "Meal" regardless of the source is usually the off-cuttings of the butchering process.
