My dog only walks outside. Does she still need flea & tick meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I own a 12 lbs yorkiepoo that I am thinking about giving my pet flea and tick treatment. She is only outside for walks and there are no other pets in the home. Do I need to treat her preventatively? I've only had her for a month.

Yes, I would recommend putting her on a flea prevention at the very least - you may not need tick coverage if she doesn't go into wooded areas or tall grass, but almost all pets are exposed to fleas simply be going for a daily walk. The best products currently available are oral medications such as Comfortis/Trifexis, Nexgard, and Bravecto - you can get these from your vet.
