My dog has a pimple. What can I use over the counter before a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 22 lbs

My dog did have what I thought was a rash because of a flea infestation I have gotten from having mice in my apartment. Now my mice problem is gone and his "rash"from scratching,my assumption, has gotten better, but yesterday he had a small bump like the beginning of a pimlpe and this morning it looked like a full blown pimple. Is there anything over the counter I can try before taking him to the vet, like a cream, ointment, or oral medication? Concerned furmommy

Hello. I would not apply any products, however you can try just washing the area well with warm water, and then drying it very well. Make sure that Palomo isn't chewing at it, and if he is get him a cone. A mild skin irritation will clear up with just lack of moisture and a bit of time. If it is getting worse it will likely need antibiotics, which you cannot get over the counter. Good luck with him!
