Why is my old cat's swollen nose bleeding despite antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat has had a "stuffy" nose for a few weeks now. It eventually resulted in swelling of the nose, mostly one side, but then to the other. The vet has had us try different antibiotics, and while it did make the swelling go down, 4 days after the treatment ended the swelling came back. Hes on antibiotics again but the one side is still slightly swollen still, same eye has discharge, and that nostril has been bleeding very slightly. He's 10 years old.Could this be a chronic infection, or a tumor?

In a 10 year old cat, it's certainly possible that your cat has a tumor. Given that he has been having continuing problems with this swelling, I recommend having further testing done such a blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays of his head. This will help vet see if there is a tumor in his nasal cavity, and then the vet can discuss treatment options.
