My 11-year-old Boxer is skinny. Should I worry if he's happy and eats well?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 10 years and 11 months old | 54 lbs

Neutered boxer, 11 years old, having trouble keeping weight on. Has been skinny since recovered from parvo at 6 months. Should I be worried about his weight if he's happy and eating well? He eats free feed, anywhere from 4-8 cups per day. No worms, clean bloodwork 1-2 years ago.

I would have repeat blood work done on Thor just to check how his body is functioning. Things can change in a year or two, and it's always a good idea to do a recheck. If his blood work comes back clean, then I would discuss with your vet if they feel he needs to gain weight or not. He may just be a skinnier dog naturally. I had a Boxer who was the runt of his litter, and he was skinny his entire life no matter how much I fed him and he was perfectly healthy as well :-)
