Why do my cats sometimes get aggressive during play or lounging?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old

It's quite but nothing serious. Sometimes both my cats will be normal around each other. For example Oreo may hop onto the couch next to Bliss and Bliss will groom her. But sometimes Oreo may become hostile and try getting Bliss off the couch. This goes for play too. Both of them sometimes have their fur sticking up and getting hostile during play that they were totally normal in a second ago. Nothing major, the dont attack each other of course! They seem like buddies, but I'm curious of this.

It sounds like Oreo and Bliss get annoyed with each other at times. Just like humans, cats can become annoyed with their companion's company, and react with aggression. I have four cats, and while they typically get along really well with each other, occasionally they have spats where they get grumpy with each other. It's normal cat behavior, and not something to worry about :-)
