My dog is scratching her painful ear with brown wax. Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 53 lbs

My 3 year old pit bull/lab mix has been scratching at her right ear and shaking her head alot. When I try to help rub her ear, she squeals a bit like it hurts. We checked her ear and there is an excess of brown was buildup in there and we tried to clean it with a paper towel but she got distressed pretty fast so we stopped. There wasn't any foul smell coming from the ear. The left ear doesn't seem as itchy and only has light yellow wax. Does she need a vet or can we do an ear rinse at home?

This sounds quite uncomfortable for Maybelline! Oftentimes a buildup of dark brown debris occurs with ear infections from bacteria and/or yeast. Ear cleaners can help get rid of the bigger pieces of debris, but only prescription based medications will treat the actual infection. Maybelline should see her vet so that her ears can be examined and have a cytology performed to determine the infectious agents causing her infection. From there, your vet will be able to prescribe the most appropriate medication for her.
