My senior dog has a large nipple lump. Is it time for euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rhodesian Ridgeback | Female | spayed | 12 years and 1 month old | 70 lbs

My dog has had skin issues all her life, she is 13yrs old. We have tried our best to take care of the issue, but she has chewed one of her nipples soo bad that it is huge and actually hangs down to the floor. I believe it is a cancerous tumor, but my husband refuses to believe it, she is his baby. My question, should be have her euthanized? It looks exactly like the pictureon this website.

Euthanasia is a difficult decision for all involved. Without examining Nels, I can't say how her quality of life may be affected by this hanging mass, the cause of the mass, or any possible treatments. The best way to determine the underlying cause of Nels' mass is to take her to the vet for an exam and fine needle aspirate (FNA). The FNA is performed by sticking a needle into the mass to draw out a few cells and then examine them microscopically. This procedure is generally quick and relatively painless. From there, you should have more information as to whether the lesion is benign or malignant, and your vet will be able to provide more information as to whether or not surgery and antibiotics are indicated. If Nels is otherwise eating, drinking, and acting normally, I would recommend getting more information before making a life-ending decision.
