My dog is licking her tail, in pain, and can't poop. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 42 lbs

My 1-year-old standard poodle has been liking her tail and anus, and has had pale-colored stools since this morning, She seems to be in pain, and has a sort of "creeping" gait when I take her out - as if she has to poop but can't decide to go. Yesterday she was active and eating and playing, and today she is listless and not moving very much. When we come i the house, she heads for the corner of the bathroom and curls up on a little rug, so I can tell she doesn't feel well. She has not vomited.

It sounds as if Maggie is either constipated, or is having trouble with her anal glands. These glands are just inside the rectum and may need to be emptied out, at your vet clinic. The other possibility is that she has a painful back or pelvis, which could be making it difficult for her to position herself to pass stool. Sounds like she could use a trip to see her vet, as soon as possible! Best of luck with Maggie!
