My dog's eye is bleeding, has high pressure & cataracts. Options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Standard Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

My dogs eye is too full of blood to see whats wrong and they suggested removal ot we have to keep him on drops in order to get the blood to drain but his eye pressure test went from 42 to 30 in two weeks but we still cant see the cause but there seems to be a line on his eye so we assume trauma. He has cataracts also. What could it be and what are my options. Hes an older shnauzer

I'm sorry that Benji is having problems with his eye! It is concerning that his eye keeps filling up with blood, and it certainly is possible that it was caused by trauma. Normal intraocular pressure in dogs is between 10-20, so his is still high and that increased pressure is likely due to the bleeding. I'm not sure how long you have been treating Benji's eye, but if it's been a while and it's still filling up with blood, then removing the eye may be the best option. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain, but I would recommend having him seen by a veterinary ophthalmologist. They will be experts in diseases of the eye, and may be able to come up with a definitive diagnosis and offer more treatment options for Benji. I would speak to your vet about a referral to one. I hope this helps you, good luck!
