My puppy barks all night in his crate. Should I move it to my room?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello- I got my standard poodle last week (today he is 9 weeks old!) I have been crate training. His crate is located in my living, I have a small one story ranch style house. I have been trying not to let him out during the night and not letting him see me (trying to have him learn to hold his bladder at night). He has been barking, whining, howling most hours of the night. I am wondering if I should move his crate in my bedroom, in hopes of less barking/whining. What would your opinion be?

Hello. Crate training takes time, so keep persevering. That being said, expect dogs to be able to hold their bladders the number of months they are in terms of hours, as a general rule. They can hold it a little longer at night. Expect to have to wake up in the middle of the night to let him outside. Bring him outside, let him pee, then right back inside into the crate. No playing or else he will get used to that. The whining and barking should subside soon. HAve fun with him!
