Why is my puppy's outer ear skin red and irritated like eczema?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dogo Argentino | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 20 days old | 19.8 lbs

My Dogo Argentino Puppy (3 months old), has irritated skin on the outside of his ears, close to where his ears join his head. It looks very similar to eczema, on one ear it is a little red. He plays a lot with our terrier and they are always biting each other ears as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. The irritated skin could be due to scratching of the head. This can be due to mites, or fleas, or ear infections. I would try checking for fleas and getting a flea product (usually they will treat mites as well), and also clean the area. If it continues to get worse you may have to get a skin scraping performed to look for different types of mites. If it has any discharge or looks wet at all it may need antibiotics. Otherwise try cleaning it just with water and if it heals up don't worry. Good luck with Blanco.

There certainly looks to be be hairloss, scaling, and some redness. In a young dog the most common cause would be a parasite, especially if itchy. The most common would be mites, either scabies or demodex. It could also be an infection (bacteria, yeast, etc.). As some parasites can be passed to people it would be best to have your vet take a look. They will likely recommend a skin scrape and skin cytology to look for parasites or infection. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
