Why is my unvaccinated dog not eating, vomiting, and running a fever?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 24 days old | 12 lbs

Our beagle, Martin, hasn't been eating for 2 days since we forgot to give him food one day and vomited a few hours later but he's drinking water. We tried giving him dog food, other meats but he won't touch it. He did eat after he went for a run with the other dogs. The other night he was really hot and he hasn't been vaccinated. How do I make him eat again and what could be the cause of his lack of appetite?

Hello. Many things could cause his loss of appetite including something stuck in the gut (sock, toy, ball), an infection (virus, bacteria), or an upset stomach from eating something that didn't agree with him. If Martin is otherwise bright and happy and playing, I would try feeding some rice and some boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast, in small frequent meals. If he is lethargic, vomiting, having diarrhea, or not wanting to eat still, I would take him to a vet. Since he is unvaccinated he may have other very serious illnesses.
