My dog bit himself once. Is a single bite a sign of fleas or just an itch?

My dog bit at himself once today. Is this a symptom of fleas if it was only once or twice?

It is possible that your dog has fleas, but with only one bite, it may have been a normal itch. Closely examine your dog's coat, particularly over the tail base and head/ears, for signs of adult fleas or flea dirt. Flea dirt resembles flecks of pepper that turn a reddish-brown when placed on a white paper towel and moistened with water. Make sure your dog receives a high quality flea preventative (such as Nexgard, Bravecto, Advantix) once per month.
