Dog bit tail, bone exposed. Why is he shivering and losing appetite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 30 lbs

I have a 5 year old mix-breed German Shepherd dog. A week ago he bit the tip of his tail and removed all the fur. With the help of medications fur has started to come up but there's a tiny tip of bone protruding out from the tip. Now his hind legs are shivering every now and then. And he seems a bit tired with loss of appetite as well. Please suggest what can be done.can these be the symptoms of degenerative myelopathy? we don't have a good vet around.

Hello. I am sorry to hear that Chulbul is having trouble. If bone is present then you need to have the tip of the tail amputated. Any vet should be able to perform this surgery. Also, antiboitics and pain medications are needed. Exposed bone means exposed spinal cord, and infection can travel up this quite easily. Loss of appetite means that he may have a systemic infection now. You need to get him to a vet, and get bloodwork to check for infection and get the tip of his tail amputated and surgical closed up properly. This is not degenerative myelopathy. The signs of that are different, and are unrelated to infection.
