My dachshund's hair is thinning. Could it be a chicken food allergy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 7 lbs

My daschund's hair is starting to thin out in patches & he is nibbling the fur off his bottom. I changed his food to lamb & rice. It was slightly getting better. I accidentally bought chicken & rice & its worse!

It is quite possible that Digger is experiencing hair loss and itching as a result of a food allergy, or allergies to fleas or environmental conditions. Other possible cause of hair loss include hypothyroidism or even a variety of normal within a breed. That said, since Digger's skin initially improved with the lamb and rice diet, it very well may be that he has a sensitivity to chicken. Transition him back to the lamb and rice diet, but be aware that it may take 2-3 months to determine if a diet change has actually improved signs of allergies. If his itching intensifies in this time or he develops any redness or irritation to his skin, Digger should be seen by his vet to rule out the possibility of a skin infection as a result of his itching/nibbling.
