Is sugar-free ice cream safe for my diabetic cat? What about xylitol?

Hi, my 15 year old cat has just been diagnosed as diabetic. He gets one unit of insulin every 12 hours. Is it OK for him to have a little sugar free ice cream? (He loves ice cream!). Thanks! Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 14 years and 10 months old | 10 lbs

Who doesn't love ice cream? :-) That said, Poindexter should not have sugar free ice cream. Even artificial sweeteners used in sugar-free products can be problematic because some (such as xylitol) are highly toxic to pets. Most cats are also lactose intolerant and can develop vomiting and diarrhea as a result of consuming dairy products.
