My dog growls at my child after a food incident. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 0 lbs

We have a Doberman/Rottweiler crossing male who we have brought up since puppy. My daughter is 6 and loves him very much - they always got along very well where she would play with hom non-stop. Two weeks ago she gave him some food and by mistake she pushed him aside to add more food to his bowl, he immediately growled a warning at her and we stepped in. Ever since she has been weary of him and when she decides to play or even pet him a bit - he keeps on growling at her. What should we do?

This is a very concerning and potentially dangerous behavior. Guarding of food and feeding opportunities is a common instinctive behavior but the fact this is now extending to normal activities should raise immediate alarm bells. Make sure your daughter has no access to him unless they are kept at a distance and he is completely controlled on a short leash until you can arrange assessment in the ho.e with a certified behaviorist
