My dog has blood around his penis, not urethra, but shows no pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Brittany | Male | neutered | 9 years and 10 months old | 45 lbs

We woke up to blood on the floor and saw it's coming from our 9 year old dogs penis. It seems to be coming from around it not actually out the urethra. It doesn't seem to hurt him.

I'm glad that Bogey is not bothered by the blood! If the blood was coming from his urethra, we would certainly be more inclined to suspect a urinary tract infection, crystals, or stones in the bladder or urethra. However, since you are concerned that it is coming from around the penis in the prepuce, or sheath, I would be more concerned that Bogey has either foreign material, a mass or infection. His vet should be able to perform a thorough physical exam to evaluate this condition.
