Adopting a dog with thyroid issues: Is medication a lifelong commitment?

Pet's info: Dog | Shetland Sheepdog | Female | 38 lbs

considering adopting 4 year old sheltie rescue... she is taking 2 thyroid pills a day and is 13 lbs overweight... will she be able to come off pills if weight is stablized or is this a continuing problem and as their other issues to watch out for.... husband had dementia and i don't want too much extra things to worry about with her if we adopt her ..

Hi there! Usually thyroid supplementation is for life! Hopefully her weight will start to improve as she continues the medication, with lots of exercise! Definitely it is something to think over, although generally it is not too difficult to manage a pet with thyroid issues. They do need to have their blood tested periodically to help with the ongoing dosing of the thyroid medication. Hope this helps!
