Is anesthesia safe for my dog's neuter with high liver enzymes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a 1.2 year old Toy Australian Shepard with a history of elevated liver enzymes (SGPT at 2248) and a biliary mucocele. He was traeted with Actigall for about 8 weeks, with repeated bloodwork showing normal levels. About a month ago, repeated bloodwork about a month ago due to some vomitting, and levels back up to 400. No other syptoms and no more vomitting. Due for repeat bloodwork tomorrow and IF normal, neuter surgery on Friday. Concerned about anesthesia. What do you think? Thank You

If the liver enzymes are elevated but liver function is normal there is probably not a significant increased risk under anesthesia. You could talk to your veterinarian about checking bile acids if it seems like this might be helpful; bile acids can help determine whether or not the liver is functioning normally. Sometimes a biliary mucocele is surgically corrected so you also may want to talk to your veterinarian about rechecking the mucocele if liver enzymes are still elevated.

Hello! I think you are doing a great job looking into this, and I'm glad to hear the vomiting is under control! I think if the blood levels are good, and your vet is comfortable with how he is looking, that anesthetic should be okay! But, of course, your vet is the best judge of this! Good luck with the repeat bloodwork tomorrow!
