Why does my Corgi bark all night when my girlfriend sleeps over, help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | unneutered | 22 lbs

I have an 8 month year old Corgi who sleeps in a cage in my room each night. He goes to bed and sleeps quietly if it's just me in the room. However, he will not stop whining/barking every time my girlfriend sleeps over. He needs attention from this "new guest" and will literally stay awake whining/barking from 10PM to early hours of the morning. If I lock him out of the room, he does the same thing. Please help.

It sounds like Chance may be a bit taken by your girlfriend, as well as a little stressed by the situation. If he's still very young it may be that you just have to "wait out" the behavior until he learns that it is not OK to whine to get attention. Rewarding him by opening up the kennel door when he whines will only encourage the behavior. You can try to distract him from whining by offering something that smells like your girlfriend to cuddle on, or even a treat or puzzle toy stuffed with treats to encourage calm behavior. You can also gradually get him used to being kenneled with your girlfriend over by having him in there during the day for short 5-10m periods, then rewarding him and letting him out when he is calm and quiet. Make sure that the kennel is also not used as a punishment when your girlfriend is over, you want him to associate her, and the kennel with good things happening, not stressful ones.
