Why are my dogs licking and chewing their paws, causing redness and hair loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

For about 2 mos, our 2 small dogs have taken to licking/chewing one of their front paws. Pixel, we thought might be compulsive behavior. Upon close examination, there was redness and a very tiny abrasion, little to no oozing. We have been treating w/ regular cleaning & ointment. Jax has now started the same behavior and we see that the top of one of his toes lost a small patch of hair, is red, just a bit puffy. We see no evidence of broken skin or oozing. Diet is Blue Buffalo Basics.

Hello! It might help to cover their feet with little socks, and keep them distracted so they don't continue to traumatize the skin? It is unlikely that there is something contagious between the two dogs, unless they both have fleas or some sort of skin parasite? If they are not getting better, probably a good idea to have them checked by your vet?
