Puppy has a wheezy cough after choking. When should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello, earlier today I had to take my puppy into the vet as I think he was choking, he had a wheezy cough and kept trying to bring something up, when we arrived he seems to have fixed it himself with the regurgitating, it's been a few hours now and he has the wheezy cough every now and then, mostly when he's on his back, is it something to worry about? The vet said it may be irritation from whatever he had been choking on

If the cough is occurring every now and then and your dog seems comfortable, I would not worry about it. It will take some time, (3-4days ), for the inflammation to disappear completely. If at any point symptoms should get worse, then it' s worthy to take another look at him.
