My 8-week-old puppy barks at night. How to make her sleep alone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 4 lbs

We have a new 8 week old puppy (Jack Russell X Rhodesian ridgeback) and she is barking incessantly at night. It's only the 4th night but the only way she'll stop is if we sleep close by her. We don't want to get in the habit of that because we want her to eventually sleep outside (she's currently indoors at night, in a penned off area). How do we encourage her to sleep comfortably alone without us beside her, and not to bark? We are taking her out to the garden to pee a few times a night.

This can be both frustrating and exhausting! I'm glad to hear that Lou is able to relax and sleep if you are nearby. Consider giving her a shirt or blanket that has your scent on it and put it in her area at night. This may be a bit more involved, but try sleeping further and further away from her each night until she becomes more comfortable. One last thing to try includes purchasing a dog calming pheromone diffuser to place near her crate (Adaptil is one example). I hope this helps and that everyone is able to sleep well soon!
