Senior dog's tail cyst bursts and bleeds. Is surgery safe for him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 11 years and 2 months old

Our dog has a cyst on his tail. It grows really big then bursts and then fills up again, this is a constant cycle, it seems to burst every couple weeks. The local vet said he doesn't want to remove it as he's 12 and doesn't want to risk putting him under anaestetic at his age. It has burst tonight and we're concerned as it's bleeding a lot. What can you suggest?

That does sound very concerning! I would apply pressure to try to stop the bleeding. Because it's been a continual problem, the cyst may need to be removed surgically. I recommend having a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis done on Treeko. This will give the vet a detail picture of his anesthetic risk, and can make the determination if he can be put under anesthesia safely.
