My cat's meow changed after kittens. Is she protective or nervous?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siberian | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 10 lbs

Ambi, She is a very moody/ nervous/ shy cat.. one day she'll be affectionate the other day she'll be scared of me for no reason so she'd hide somewhere. 6 days ago she gave birth to 4 kittens.. one she ate... 3 others she kept. She seems like she really cares for them but the problem is her meow sort of changed.. so I don't know what mood she's in.. when I try to handle her kittens shed put her paw on my hand and meow in a lone tone. I'm not sure if she's nervous or what. She's acting weird af.

It sounds as though Ambi is being a protective momma cat by guarding her kittens when anyone else (even you!) come near them. Watch her closely to make sure she is appropriately feeding and caring for her remaining kittens, but try not to touch or interfere with the kittens if she is so protective. If this is her first litter, she may also have a bit of a learning curve to hone her maternal instincts.
