I apply a vet prescribed flea treatment on my dog monthly.I noticed he shakes his head and scratches under his mouth/jaw area before the neck a few times a day. I checked for flea dirt/eggs and found nothing besides five specks of dirt (which I think is normal dirt as I saw the same dirt on him months ago and nothing came of it).after letting him inside i saw one flea on him a few days ago, but removed it and vaccumed.why do you think he itches?am i in the clear from one flea?i also see dandruff

High quality flea preventatives are very effective, so I would be surprised if your dog is itching from fleas. Different flea preventatives utilize different mechanisms of action to kill fleas. Some preventatives work by killing the flea after it bites, so it is not unheard of to see one rare flea. The important part is that the flea is killed before it has a chance to reproduce and lay eggs. The next time you see dirt on your dog, try to put it onto a white paper towel and moisten it slightly. Flea dirt becomes a reddish-brown color when wet. If you do not notice a significant color change, it is just regular dirt. The dandruff may be appearing as a result of skin sloughing when your dog itches. Allergies to a wide variety of environmental influences and food are a common cause of itching in dogs. Consider discussing this intense itching with your vet because dogs can develop skin infections by introducing bacteria or yeast from excessive scratching.

Dogs can itch for many reasons. The best place to look for fleas is on the lower back just above the tail and in between the hind legs. Most flea products from veterinarians should work well as long as they are applied every 30 days. Remember that these products are not a repelant and fleas have to make contact with the pet in order for the product to work. If you are using your flea product appropriately and you are still seeing fleas, talk to your veterinarian about switching products. Food allergies and environmental allergies can also make pets itchy. If you suspect one of these, talk to your veterinarian about how to best diagnose the problem. Best of luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. If he is shaking his head and scratching his ears, it is possible that he has an ear infection. If his ears appear red, have discharge or are itchy when you touch them, then his is likely. He will need to see his veterinarian to determine the cause of the infection and for proper treatment. If the ears look normal on the outside, but the itching persists, then I still recommend an examination. The ear canal curves deep within his head and it cannot be fully visualized from the outside. He could have an infection deep inside. I hope this information helps!
