My dog's penis is inflamed and he's licking it. Can I use antiseptic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 8 days old | 27 lbs

My dog is 7 months old and has sometimes had whitish green discharge from his penis. Two days ago I noticed that the tip was inflamed and irritated and he won't stop licking it. A website told me to put antiseptic on it, is that correct?

Green discharge is an normal occurrence in unneutered dogs, but inflammation on the tip of the penis is not. it could be an infection, putting a cream locally is not likely to help, you will need to take him to the vet as he may need an antibiotic course or anti inflammatories.
