My senior cat with kidney disease is coughing. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | spayed | 13 years and 4 months old | 6 lbs

i have a 14 year old Siamese ca who is in stage 2 renal failure and recently shes been coughing a lot and its not a hairball cough, but when she does cough her whole body flexes. She hasn't had anything come up but the coughing occurs about 5 times a day or more and lasts for about 30 seconds and i'm not sure if i should be concerned for her health? She doesn't seem to be in pain and she eats and drinks and seems happy but i was wondering if i should be worried and if this is a bad sign?

Poor Coco! Yes, I would be concerned about this cough, as in a senior cat it could be caused by cardiac disease or cancer. It's important she is seen by a vet for it, and I would take her in tomorrow if possible for a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays. These tests will aid the vet in diagnosing her symptoms so that a treatment plan can be developed.
