Dog with CHF coughing badly. Is there safe cough medicine for her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

my 12 yr old, 10 # chihuahua has been diagnosed with CHF. She is currently on Lasix Vetmedin and Benzaepril. She has a dry cough worse today. Is there any type of cough medicine than she could take. Her vet is closed and honestly I dont have the $$ to go to the ER. Honey? or pediatric cough mediicine. Any thing to help her. Thank you

Daisy Mae is taking a generally effective combination of medications to manage congestive heart failure. In cases of CHF, a change in coughing is generally indicative of changes in the heart size or fluid accumulation in and around the lungs. In these cases, cough suppressants are not likely to be effective. Do not give her any over the counter cough suppressants without speaking with your vet. If you cannot take her to an ER tonight, closely monitor her breathing for signs of distress and take her to your vet in the morning.
